By Paul Bramhall

The horror anthology is a production that’s been around for years, and in Asia there have been several takes on the format in the 21st century. The early 2000’s gave us the Three…Extremes multi-country anthologies, the late 2000’s gave us Thailand’s 4bia and its sequel, by the time it was the early 2010’s Hong Kong offered up the 2 Tales from the Dark anthologies, and in the 2020’s they’re still at it with the recent Tales from the Occult franchise. Korea has gotten in on the action too, with the Horror Stories trilogy that ran from 2012 to 2016, and more recently with 2021’s Ghost Mansion.

Continuing the trend, in 2023 Korea hopped back on the horror anthology bandwagon with Tastes of Horror. Taken from a webtoon of the same name which featured 19 horror stories, 10 of them were selected to be turned into short films by 5 directors, with each helming 2. Curiously the final released version only contains 6, with 4 entries – Tick Tock Tick Tock by Kim Yong-gyun, Delivery Complete by Im Dae-woong, Hey, Marmons by Ahn Sang-hoon, and Gold Tooth by Yoon Eun-kyung – missing in action. Likely due to length, with the 6 remaining making Continue reading

Hopeless (2023) Review

"Hopeless" Theatrical Poster

“Hopeless” Theatrical Poster

Director: Kim Chang-hoon
Cast: Hong Xa-bin, Kim Hyung-seo (Bibi), Song Joong-ki, Kim Jong-soo, Park Bo-Kyung
Running Time: 125 min.

By Paul Bramhall

In Korean cinema it almost feels like a rite of passage for debut writer and directors to tackle the gritty social drama, usually focusing on those who live on the bottom rungs of Korean society, and with 2023’s Hopeless Kim Chang-hoon proves he’s not going to be one to buck the trend. In this case we get Hong Xa-bin, a rising star who, after supporting roles in the likes of 2019’s Tune in for Love and 2022’s Nobody’s Lover, would take the lead role twice in 2023, with Hopeless and So Long, See You Tomorrow marking him as a talent to look out for.

Here he plays a 17-year-old high school student who’s leading a tough life. While he dreams of immigrating to the Netherlands with his mother and starting afresh, his day-to-day reality is a world away. Living in a deadbeat town, at home he has to suffer the beatings from his alcoholic stepfather, and is forced to share a room with his stepsister, played by Kim Hyung-seo (more popularly known as singer-songwriter BIBI, who’s also featured in the likes of Whispering Corridors 6: The Humming and Phantom). When he takes revenge on a fellow student who’s been harassing Hyung-seo, he finds himself suspended and unable to come up with the compensation Continue reading

It’s a miracle! Yuen Woo-ping’s 1982 Golden Harvest kung fu fantasy classic is now available on Blu-ray from Eureka

The Miracle Fighters | Bu-ray (Eureka)

The Miracle Fighters | Bu-ray (Eureka)

Now shipping from Goodie Emporium is Eureka’s Blu-ray (Region A/B) for The Miracle Fighters, a 1982 kung fu fantasy classic from the legendary choreographer/director Yuen Woo-ping (Dreadnaught, In the Line of Duty 4).

Hailed as one of the “weirdest” kung fu/fantasy movies to be distributed under the Golden Harvest banner – and certainly shouldn’t be confused or compared with Tsui Hark’s seminal masterpiece Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain (also 1982) – The Miracle Fighters is an octane fueled tale of despotism, ego-based ambition and insanely cerebral magical practices. Again using Yin/Yang metaphors, Ping’s physical depictions of Chinese occultism is clearly defined by both ‘light’ and ‘dark’ forces, regardless of its signature trappings or banal dialogue. Its true magical sturdiness lies in the picture’s motion and fluidity, not in the Continue reading
